Date of birth: 14.03.2021
Zaporizhzhia city

Diagnosis:
Cerebral palsy, spastic diplegia,
polymicrogyria, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, periventricular cysts (brain malformations as a consequence of hypoxic-ischemic damage).

Artem’s story is written from the words of his mother Anastasia:

“My husband and I have been dreaming of having children since 2016, but the children were in no hurry to come to us. After four attempts, we finally heard about our long-awaited pregnancy, and it was with twins. The pregnancy was very difficult, and I spent almost all my time under observation in the hospital. On March 14, 2021, at 25 weeks of pregnancy, our boys, Artem (weighing 900 grams) and Zakhar (weighing 700 grams), were born. Unfortunately, on March 16, Zakharchyk became an angel. Artem continued his fight for life, which continues to this day.

2.5 months of intensive care, 1.5 months of mechanical ventilation, at 4 months of age an urgent operation to remove inguinal hernias, up to 4.5 months of oxygen support and at 5.5 months we were discharged home …. but not for long.
At the age of 6 and 9 months, my son suffered from aspiration pneumonia twice. Even on his first New Year’s Eve, 2022, Artem met in the white walls of the intensive care unit.

Since birth, Artem has had a very poor digestion of food. The cause of his vomiting syndrome has not yet been found. He has passed all possible diagnostic tests in Ukraine. Geneticists at the Okhmatdyt hospital recommend DNA testing according to the coronavirus.

Artem spends most of his life in the hospital.
When he was one year old, he was diagnosed: Cerebral palsy, spastic diplegia, polymicrogyria, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, and perventicular cysts, the consequences of hypoxic-ischemic damage during childbirth. He cannot sit, walk and stand on his own, only rolls over. But my son is very smart, understands everything, and he is always smiling. The doctors’ reports are not bad, but he needs constant work with rehabilitation specialists (physical therapists, speech therapists and many others).

In the fall of 2022, Artem was fitted with a gastrostomy because his body could hardly absorb food. Now the son will be fed with special high-calorie liquid formulas for life, because without them he will not gain weight and strength.
Also, the gastrostomy tube and other consumables (feeding syringes, adapters, sterile surgical napkins, processing agents and dressings) need to be replaced periodically. All this is expensive and almost unavailable in Ukraine, so we are looking for it through volunteers from abroad.

Since birth, physical therapists have been working with Artem. Previously, rehabilitation courses were often interrupted due to Tyma’s constant illnesses (most often aspiration pneumonia). Now, after the installation of a gastrostomy, he has gained strength and we have already completed two full courses at the Step by Step rehabilitation center and have made great progress: Artem began to sit with support and even for 20-30 seconds on his own (for some it is nothing, but for us it is a great achievement), he is trying to crawl like a scout, started to speak his language (mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, godfather, ava, duduka (car), takai (push), ball, pat (sleep) and many different sounds, almost words), and is slowly learning to speak in phrases. He is intellectually fully intact, understands everything, laughs, and takes offense.

Our family believes that Artem will walk and talk, go for walks with the children and after the victory we will go to the sea.

We will be grateful to everyone for their help in treating and improving life for our son.”
