Diagnosis: spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
Every woman dreams about becoming a mother. Knowing the diagnosis of infertility, Dolgov’s family from Urzuf city in Donetsk region did not stop waiting for a miracle. And the miracle happened! On March 8, Nadezhda (the mother) realized that she would have a child!
Pregnancy proceeded normally. The birth of the child was successful. Everyone in the maternity hospital called baby Ilya Muromets because of his healthy measurements (4200 kg, height 62 cm). The kid-hero grew up to the joy of his father and mother. However, at five months the parents began to notice that the child is constantly lying down, not as active as children of his age. The local pediatrician reassured the young parents, saying that the baby was just lazy. Time passed, but physical activity did not increase. At 6 months, Andrew had a sharp temperature jump with vomiting and severe diarrhea, which doctors attributed to the age-related reaction to his teeth. After a month and a half, the baby became worse: he could not move his arms and legs, he practically did not sit. As a result of the examination in the regional children’s clinic in the department of neurology in Donetsk, a preliminary diagnosis was made – spinal muscular atrophy (MCA) Verdniga Hoffmann. After genetic analysis and electromyography, the diagnosis was confirmed. Even having heard the terrible prognosis of the professor, that the baby wouldn’t live even for half a year the parents did not abandon Andrey. Bitterness, despair, resentment, fear, sleepless nights in tears …
Grandmother stopped this endress circle of hopeless time by saying: “If you keep pouring tears, it will not help your child”. So the young parents started acting.
They brought their son to Kiev to see a neurologist at the Ohmad clinic. Again they received disappointing news for the son and another terrible news that they have only 25% chance of having a healthy child due to genetic problems (case one in a million).
Probably, extreme despair sometimes gives strength for further struggle. Kharkov, Kyiv, Donetsk, Zaporozhye … examinations, rehabilitations … Andrey (dad) and Nadezhda did everything to help their first child. The son began to sit confidently, move his legs and arms, ride a special bicycle. Today, Andrey is socialized: he studies in a normal school, attends cultural events, travels (in a wheelchair) with his parents. Like every child, Andrey has dreams: to have a friend – dog and to travel the world. Mother and son have another common dream – to dance a waltz at the graduation party. And for this he needs to continue to fight with SMA.
