The story is told by his mother. And it is not only about Vadym, it is about dreams and life’s trials, but also about faith, hope and a mother’s love.
“We are an ordinary large family. Five children are my most valuable gifts from God!

When I was young, I dreamed of a career, graduated from high school with a gold medal, entered the history department, and then worked at a school. I got married and had a daughter, Olenka. When the child turned 3, we went to the sea for the first time in our lives. But two days later, a tragedy happened – my husband drowned – and at the age of 23 I became a widow. There were many trials: loans, despair, but I pulled myself together and went to work in the editorial office of a local newspaper. Four years later, I got married for the second time. Together with my husband we really wanted more children, I was delirious, looking at every pregnant woman… I had unsuccessful IVF.

Then my long-awaited son Oleh was born, and a year later, my daughter Alya. We lived, worked, and enjoyed parenthood. Alia was four years old when we found out we were expecting a son! After IVF and all the hardships, we decided without a doubt that this was a gift from God! The pregnancy was easy, I worked and did everything at home. Vadym was born on time on August 15, 2018. On the third day, we left the hospital and went home. We celebrated the christening and enjoyed every day. I went to all the checkups every month, the doctors had no doubt that my son was healthy. Then I noticed that he was sleeping a lot and not holding his head. I went to several pediatricians and they reassured me: “You are panicking… it happens.”

Then the first seizures appeared, we took a bunch of tests, and went to more than ten neurologists. We visited different clinics every month in Chernivtsi, Kyiv, Ternopil, Warsaw… Vadym slept only an hour or two at night, and this continues to this day. I refused to confirm my disability for a long time, because it seemed to me that it was my fault that I was living, seeing, hearing, and my son was not, that the older children were talking and he was not… I decided that I had no right to give up. Vadym and I went to rehabilitation in Lviv at the Elita Center – it was hard to watch the massages and hear my son’s endless crying. I didn’t know how to go on and told everyone that I was waiting for something, I didn’t know what, for some force to pull me out of this state. Soon after a routine medical examination, a week after Vadik’s first rehabilitation, the doctor said: “Congratulations! You are going to have a girl”. And I realized that this was the Hope I had been waiting for! All the relatives were shocked, they gave me slanted looks and different opinions. But my husband and I decided that this was our life. Life is a gift!
We accepted Nadia.
We are happy because five children are a real treasure!”

“Vadym does not hold his head on his own, does not speak, does not walk. Most of all, he likes to sit in a child seat. He does not like to change clothes and does not like to be disturbed at all. Sometimes he smiles, sometimes he can say: “Uh-huh”. My son does not sleep much – up to 3-4 hours a night. When the weather changes, he cries a lot – maybe even for several hours – and calms down only in my arms. Vadym does not chew on his own – he only purees his food with a blender. I often tell him everything that’s on my mind, explain why there was no electricity (last winter, 2022), tell him who’s to blame..

I rejoice in the success of my older daughter, teach my youngest daughter to say words correctly, help Oleh with his homework – he always wants to do well, and help my daughter Ali make Tik-Tok videos. Sometimes it can be very hard, both mentally, physically and financially… My family is my life – my main project.”

The family is limited in resources. Vadym is in constant need of diapers, medicines, vitamin complexes, orthopedic clothing, specialized invalid special wheelchair for the carblender.
