Daria Klymenko. Project "Happiness for every family"

Date of birth: 15.11.2018

Diagnosis: Cerebral palsy, chromosomal mutation.

The family is fighting for a happy future for their daughter, whom they have been waiting for for 8 years. The parents have undergone all possible infertility treatments, five IVF treatments. Everything was going well until the fifth month of pregnancy, when suddenly, at a regular checkup, she was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a rare but serious complication that can lead to premature birth, and a Rh conflict between mother and child. A month in the intensive care unit of the hospital. At 28 weeks of pregnancy, a cesarean section was performed to prevent a threat to the mother’s life. On 11/15/2018, a girl was born, 870 grams, 36 cm tall. The child was not breathing on his own, he was connected to artificial lung ventilation. After a month of intensive care at the maternity hospital, during the second month
she was nursed at the Okhmatdyt hospital in Kyiv.

In the first months of Dasha’s life, she was diagnosed with many diseases. The doctors did not even dare to make any predictions about the future of the baby.

The main diagnoses were: bronchopulmonary dysplasia, pneumonia, parenchymal hemorrhage, arterial hypertension, hypoxic-ischemic damage to the central nervous system, and seizures.

At the age of one and a half months, Dasha underwent eye surgery to preserve her vision. The mother and child were discharged when the girl gained the appropriate weight of 2.5 kg.

Thanks to the efforts of the doctors, Dasha got a chance to live, but not quite the same as most babies.
The girl had a serious delay in physical and mental development, spastic diplegia, cerebral palsy, chromosomal abnormalities, partial optic atrophy, and a host of other diagnoses. At the age of five and a half, the child cannot walk, talk, does not respond to her name, and many other “don’ts”… However, the parents do not give up in the fight for their daughter’s health. Rehabilitation centers are a hope for improving and stabilizing the child’s condition. Unfortunately, not all specialists were ready to work with Dasha – some refused because they saw no point in rehabilitating a child with such severe disabilities. Despite this, the parents are only looking for solutions more persistently: continuous massages to help reduce the tone of the legs, physical therapy, classes with a psychologist, occupational therapist and speech therapist.

In February 2022, Dasha underwent a surgery called SDR (selective dorsal rhizotomy). The operation involves selectively cutting the fibers of the dorsal roots of the spinal cord. It is performed in only a few medical centers in the world. One of these centers is located in Turkey. Dasha underwent a preliminary examination with doctors there and received an invitation to the surgery. Thanks to it, her lower limbs became lighter and her spasticity decreased.
Over the years, Dasha has made small achievements, both physical and mental.

For the parents, it was a great happiness to see the child for the first time in four years become interested in a pyramid toy and try to put it together on his own, to see him pull himself up by the support to stand on his feet. Not all of the lessons are enjoyable, as Dasha does not understand what is required of her, but her parents are confident that these lessons will help in the future.

In 2023, Dasha started attending a short-day group at a specialized kindergarten for children with musculoskeletal disorders. This is how parents want to socialize their child.

Dasha needs daily assistance 24/7: getting dressed, eating, taking baths, moving around outside and generally functioning in this world.

The girl also needs rehabilitation several times a year.
The parents devote all their time and money to their daughter’s classes with coaches, consult with various highly specialized doctors in Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Poland, Portugal…

On a regular basis, Dasha needs:
✔️ anticonvulsants and other medications that help the body function properly;
✔️ diapers;
✔️ blended food (due to the state of her mental development, the child does not understand that she needs to chew food) or instant cereals;

The main goal of Dasha’s parents is to do everything possible so that their daughter can take care of herself and function in the world as independently as possible.
