Anya Barchuk is a shining example of strength and endurance. She was born on November 5, 2015, in the village of Podillia, Kyiv region, with a diagnosis that changed her family’s life: spastic tetraparesis, systemic underdevelopment of speech, cognitive impairment and congenital conjugate strabismus.
Anna’s story is told by her mother, Tetiana:
“It was my first pregnancy, and at the second checkup, the doctors told me that I was expecting twins. However, at 30-31 weeks of pregnancy, one of the girls unfortunately died. I was in the hospital when the contractions started, and on November 5, Anna was born weighing only 1480 grams. Her condition was serious, and she needed urgent treatment,” says Tetiana.
Anna spent the first weeks of her life in the intensive care unit, where she underwent the necessary procedures. After she was discharged from the hospital in December 2015, the family learned of serious health problems. Over the following years, Tatiana fought for her daughter’s health, undergoing numerous examinations and rehabilitation.
“When Anna was three months old, we were prescribed treatment at the Institute of Neurosurgery. I remember how hard it was to watch her struggle. But every small success was our common victory,” says Tatiana.
Thanks to regular rehabilitation and treatment, Anna began to hold her head at five months old, and at two years old she sat up on her own for the first time. She learned to say “mom” and eventually became more confident in standing and walking with the help of rehabilitation equipment.
In 2019, Anna was diagnosed with congenital strabismus. After treatment, which included botulinum toxin injections, her vision improved. Now Anna is studying in an inclusive classroom where she receives support in learning and development.
“We live in my mother’s house, and I am grateful for all the help I receive. I dream that my daughter can live a full life, and I believe we can achieve this goal,” emphasizes Tatiana.
Anna needs further treatment and rehabilitation twice a year for the rest of her life. Here are some of her needs:
• Examination by an ophthalmologist (Zir Child clinic) – 2100 UAH
• Encephalogram – 1200 UAH
• Rehabilitation in June and August at the rehabilitation center – 43100 UAH
